The challenge

A multi-theatre hospital block needed automatic essential power for theatres, ICU, imaging and pharmacy cold chain without relying on a single frame. Acoustic limits and basement plant-room access constrained the package.

The load assessment

Clinical engineering provided essential-board schedules. We separated life-safety and clinical circuits from non-essential wings, modelled imaging inrush, and set UPS ride-through assumptions with the facilities team.

The solution specified and why

Two 500 kVA silent canopied AGP sets in N+1 with coordinated ATS. One set carries essential load; the second covers maintenance or failure. Controllers report into the facilities desk.

Installation and commissioning

After-hours cutovers, load testing and SANS 10142-1 CoC handover. Noise measurements at ward façades were recorded against estate and municipal expectations.

Results

  • Sub-12-second transfer under witnessed test to the essential clinical board.
  • Certificate of Compliance issued with the handover pack — accepted by insurers without query.
  • Monthly proving schedule adopted by clinical engineering with logged results.

“The Certificate of Compliance came with the handover pack without us having to chase it. Our insurers accepted the installation without a single query.”
