Petrol generators suit short-run portable power, site tools and light residential backup where sets stay under roughly 5–8 kVA and runtime is measured in hours, not shifts. Above that band, diesel engines from Perkins, Cummins, Hyundai and FAW deliver lower cost per kWh. Indicative portable petrol pricing in the local market often sits between R8,500 and R45,000 excl. VAT depending on inverter technology and output — we advise when a diesel silent set is the better long-term buy.

When a petrol generator makes sense — and when it does not
Petrol sets earn their place where mass, capital cost and occasional use dominate the decision. Builders running angle grinders, caterers on outdoor sites, film crews and homeowners who only need a fridge, router and a few lights through a two-hour stage-4 window often prefer a compact petrol unit they can wheel into a bakkie. Inverter petrol models also deliver cleaner sine-wave power for laptops and modern electronics than crude open-frame construction sets.
The economics flip quickly. Petrol engines burn more fuel per kWh, prefer fresher fuel (stale petrol gums carburettors), and are rarely rated for unlimited prime duty. If load shedding or off-grid operation exceeds a few hours several times a week, a 10–22 kVA silent diesel with AMF usually costs less over three years once fuel, oil and wear are counted. Noise and neighbour relations also matter: many petrol open frames sit well above 75 dB at 7 m.
Specify petrol carefully. Match continuous (not peak) wattage to your essential circuits, leave headroom for motor starts on borehole pumps or compressors, and prefer electric start with a maintained battery if anyone other than a technician will operate the set. Store fuel in approved containers, rotate stock, and never run a petrol set indoors or in a poorly ventilated garage — carbon monoxide kills quickly.
AGP Generators focuses the live catalogue on commercial diesel because that is what Southern African operations specify most. If your load profile still points to petrol, talk to us: we will either source a fit-for-purpose portable unit or show the diesel alternative with a clear running-cost comparison so procurement can decide on numbers, not habit.

Petrol Generators for Sale in South Africa FAQs
At very small outputs, yes — portable petrol units often cost less upfront. From about 8–10 kVA upward, silent diesel sets become competitive on capital cost and pull ahead on fuel and lifespan.
You can, but frequent multi-hour runs favour diesel. Petrol fuel ageing, higher consumption and shorter service intervals make diesel the usual recommendation for daily backup.
Almost all consumer petrol sets are single-phase. Three-phase motors and workshops need a three-phase diesel or a correctly specified converter — we size that properly rather than forcing a portable unit.
Quality inverter petrol generators produce low-THD output suitable for IT and AV. Conventional AVR sets vary; check the THD specification before connecting servers or medical devices.
Store limited volumes in approved containers away from living spaces, rotate fuel, and operate only outdoors with exhaust clear of windows. Install CO alarms if sets run near occupied buildings.
Yes. Most enquiries that start as “petrol” convert to a 10–30 kVA silent diesel once runtime and load are clear. Request a quote with your circuit list and we will recommend honestly.
