Single Phase Generators in South Africa

Single-phase supply is what most South African homes, boutique hotels, clinics waiting rooms and high-street shops already have on the DB board. A matching single-phase generator avoids expensive change-over to three-phase and keeps the electrical design simple: one live, neutral, earth, and an automatic or manual change-over switch. The practical ceiling sits around 20–25 kVA; beyond that, three-phase sets become more efficient and motors start more cleanly.

Load profiling still rules. List essential circuits only — not every geyser and underfloor zone unless you truly need them during outages. Fridges, freezers, Wi-Fi, lights, garage motors, a borehole pump and a few plug circuits often fit a 10 kVA set. Add ducted air-con, electric cooking or a large pump and you move toward 22 kVA. Motor starting currents can be three to seven times running amps; soft starters or a slightly larger set prevent stalling.

Noise and placement decide neighbour peace. Silent canopies, anti-vibration mounts, correct exhaust direction and a minimum clear air path around the radiator matter more on residential erven than on industrial plots. Bundle a maintenance plan: oil, filters and coolant on schedule keep small diesels reliable through years of load shedding.
