Specifying three-phase generator sets
Three-phase generation matches the supply already feeding most factories, packing sheds, shopping centres, mines and large HVAC plants. Motors start with lower line current, welders and VSDs behave predictably, and cable sizes stay practical at higher kW. If your municipal or Eskom connection is three-phase, your standby or prime set should be three-phase unless a specialist engineer designs otherwise.
Balance is a design duty, not an afterthought. Single-phase lighting and socket loads should be spread across the three legs so no phase exceeds another by roughly 10% under expected diversity. Unbalanced operation raises neutral current, heats the alternator and trips protection. We review DB schedules during sizing to keep the alternator inside its continuous rating on every leg.
Prime versus standby ratings matter on three-phase industrial sets. Continuous process loads (irrigation day shifts, manufacturing lines, cold stores) need prime-rated engines. Pure standby for grid failure can use standby ratings with higher output but limited annual hours — check ISO 8528 definitions on the datasheet, not marketing labels alone. Fuel systems should include polishing, bunding and enough autonomy for your worst historical outage cluster.
From 100 kVA upward, plan the civil and mechanical envelope early: plinth mass, exhaust route, combustion air, radiator discharge, acoustic treatment and fuel fill access.
